Are You Proactive or Reactive in Your Career Development?

I’ve been meaning to share this post from Career Rocketeer for a while now because it makes such a nice analogy between being reactive to a big snow and being reactive in your job search.

And seeing how we in St. Louis got SPRING SNOW this weekend, I find it very appropriate!

The point is simple but significant, reflecting a lot of the things I tell my Career Coaching clients. Answering every want-ad may feel proactive, but you’re simply reacting to ads someone else has already posted. You have to get out there and position yourself for the jobs that aren’t technically even open yet!

    I have mostly been Inactive — I was happy enough being a heads-down techie for too long.

    Had I eaten alone less often I might’ve discovered other interesting options sooner in my career so Never Eat Alone. Not so sure about the “network anywhere” idea; often it simply isn’t appropriate. If you’re going to network at the soccer park, probably best do it very obliquely. I have had mixed success with professional societies: the people who can help you most aren’t there — they’re too busy. LinkedIn is your friend and be sure to join LinkedIn Groups associated with your target as this will permit you to send a message to other group members — the message should always be an approach letter. The more “local” the group is, the better. If the group has offline meet-ups attend them even though it’ll cost you $20. Show your face at least three times before you ask for anything. This takes time, I know, but you gotta do it. It is best if you have something to offer before you ask: a book recommendation is enough (but that means you have to read). If you don’t have anything to offer, listen a lot and try to ask a smart question.
