I recently came across a New York Times headline that read, “The One Question You Should Ask About Every New Job.”
Now, that’s a pretty powerful headline! I obviously read on to find out what the article (written by Adam Grant) deemed to be the most important question, which basically boils down to this:
WHAT IS THE COMPANY CULTURE?
Calling any singular question “The one question you have to ask” is bold seeing how subjective of a call this is. But I must say, this is indeed one of the most important questions you can ask.
From my experience as a Career Coach, you do not want to take a job without knowing you are a good company culture fit. And the article makes a good case for why this question is so essential.
Mr. Grant specifically calls out 4 sub-questions about a company’s culture that will help you really know if it’s the right fit:
- Is the big boss human?
- Can the little person rise to the top?
- Will I get fired?
- How will the boss react to mistakes?
Read the whole article and get more insight into how and why you should ask these questions!
