changeChange. It comes with the territory when you have a career. Changes to your role within an organization could come from the ever-evolving economy, new trends in your industry that impact the way business is done or any other number of things, even a promotion.

So what will you do? Will you get caught up in the chaos? Or will you be mentally prepared to shine through it and prove your value?

I want to state this warning right from the get-go: When it comes to managing your career during a time of change, the “status quo” mind-set (just taking change as it comes and rolling with the punches) will work only for a period of time. If you are not careful, you will end up in a career and have no idea how you got there!

I remember once talking with another recruiter I worked with about how exciting it was that each of us would be receiving our very own computers (this was back when computers were just being introduced into everyone’s daily working life). I remember her saying to me, “I’m just scared to death of a computer!” It represented a change in the way she did her job that she was not ready for, and did not want to accept. I saw this fear in her and wanted to help. I decided to take the initiative and show her a few things on her new computer, specifically how to use the Web. I’ve never seen anyone learn something so fast. The very next day she came to me and said, “Did you know you can shop on the Internet?!” Her face was filled with excitement and it was clear her dread of learning a new technology was completely gone. Now, in her mind, this was the best change ever!

The point is this: People who manage their careers know how to quickly adjust and embrace change when the circus comes to town. Not every change comes with obvious positive opportunities (like being “forced” to use a new computer the way my coworker was!). You need to ask yourself what motivates you before you can focus your attention on becoming a Ringmaster of change.
